The 2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Equinox EV is built in GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant, which means it satisfies the new requirement for a $7,500 federal tax credit. It will also be among the first GM vehicles to offer DC fast-charging.

Chevy’s new SUV will offer front- and all-wheel drive options, plus a long-range battery pack with up to 300 miles of range. All models will come standard with Chevy Safety Assist, which includes forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking.

Price

The all-electric version of the popular Equinox SUV will be priced starting around $30,000. It’ll go head-to-head with electric models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV 7, Volkswagen ID.4, and Tesla Model Y, but it’s expected to come in at an attractive price that undercuts all of them.

Whether you’re looking to buy the base 1LT, the 2LT, or even the top-of-the-line 3RS, this SUV will provide you with an amazing amount of standard features for your money. Some of these include a spacious 17.7-inch driver-centric infotainment screen, an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster, and support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, a premium Bose audio system is available on higher trims. On the safety front, you’ll get to enjoy a standard suite of Chevy’s Safety Assist driver-assistance systems that will keep you safe on every journey.

You’ll also be able to add Chevy’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system, which will take the wheel when you want it to. It’s capable of operating on a variety of highways and can drive the vehicle for up to 400,000 miles. However, you must pay close attention to the road and always remain aware of the surrounding environment.

Another nice feature is that this EV can be used to receive public charging, meaning you’ll never have to worry about finding an empty station or being stranded on the side of the road. This is thanks to its long battery range and DC fast-charging capability that will allow you to recharge your vehicle in just a couple of hours.

This all-electric SUV will also be able to offer you a smooth and quiet ride. It’ll be able to reach 60 MPH in less than six seconds thanks to the instant torque that EVs are known for. This allows it to easily take on busy highways without any issues.

The Equinox EV will have plenty of storage space, as well. It’ll be able to carry up to 57 cubic feet of cargo when the rear seat is folded down. This is enough room for a few suitcases and some camping gear.

Number of Seats

The gas-powered Equinox isn’t a bad SUV, but it’s far from perfect. It lags behind its competitors in acceleration and has less than desirable fuel economy. Luckily, Chevy’s new all-electric model is here to rescue the Equinox from its unrefined past.

The 2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV seats five people comfortably and offers the same cargo space as today’s model. However, the battery-powered version has shorter overhangs, a unique roofline, and a few other design tweaks. It also comes standard with a wide set of charging options and technologies, including a 11.5-kilowatt onboard charger capable of adding 34 miles per hour. The top trim, the 3RS AWD, gets a larger 19.2-kilowatt onboard charger that can add up to 70 miles in just ten minutes, perfect for long road trips.

Inside, you’ll find a streamlined dashboard that blends a digital instrument display with a sizable infotainment touchscreen. It features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and a Wi-Fi hotspot to keep you connected while on the go. It also has a hands-free presence-based rear lift gate that opens when it senses your key fob nearby.

There’s no word on what other tech and comfort features will be available for the Equinox EV, but you can expect it to offer a similar selection of amenities as the Bolt EV hatchback and Camaro EV sedan. Chevy’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system is likely to be offered, which can help make road trips much more enjoyable for you and your passengers.

0 to 60 mph

The new Equinox EV is entering the electric vehicle market late next year, joining other models from the brand’s Chevy Bolt lineup. It is built on GM’s Ultium platform, which lets the company add different battery configurations to the same base chassis. This will allow for a wide range of driving characteristics while maintaining affordable prices. Those low prices should help the model compete with more established rivals like the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric.

The Equinox EV will have plenty of eye-catching appeal, thanks to a design that carries over from its gas-powered namesake. There are a few key differences, of course. The most obvious is the absence of a traditional engine bay. In its place is a sealed panel accented by a wide lightbar and backlit Chevrolet bowtie logo. The large charge door on the front driver’s side fender is another easy way to identify the model.

While Chevy hasn’t released 0-60 times for the Equinox EV, it expects its FWD version to get up to speed in 7 seconds and its AWD variant to do so in 6. Those numbers won’t put the model at the head of its class when it comes to acceleration, but they should prove competitive enough to lure buyers from the more established segment competitors. More important, the SUV will offer the same sort of electric instant torque that many drivers find irresistible.

Inside, the Equinox EV will feel just as functional as its gas-powered counterparts. Even the entry-level 1LT trim level will feature a digital instrument cluster and an 11-inch infotainment screen. Moving up to the 2LT, 3LT, and RS versions will unlock a 17.7-inch infotainment display and a wealth of additional comfort and safety features.

Chevrolet is aiming to overtake Tesla as the world’s leading EV maker, and that requires a strong portfolio of attractive models that can compete with Elon Musk’s offerings. There’s a new teaser video of the Equinox EV, but it doesn’t add much to what we already know about the vehicle. The battery-electric SUV will offer up to 300 miles of range and rapid charging (we presume) at a base price around $30,000, which is significantly less than other rivals like the Hummer Lucid Air or Model Y.

The Equinox EV will be available in LT and RS trims, each with two variants to offer more variety for buyers. The LT will have front-wheel drive, while the RS will offer both front- and all-wheel drive. The higher trims will also have a power liftgate, heated seats, and a larger 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen. Those looking for more advanced safety features can equip their Equinox with a suite of detection systems, including blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Chevy hasn’t revealed all of the specifics about the Equinox EV, but we do know that it will be built on GM’s new Ultifi electric platform. This platform allows for more flexibility than previous generation electric vehicles, and it will be used across all of GM’s upcoming BEVs. The new Equinox EV is 9 inches longer and 3 inches wider than the third-generation gasoline-powered Equinox, so it will offer a sportier look.

Inside, buyers will find a cabin that seats five people across two rows. Like the upcoming Blazer EV, it will use GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system. The automaker has announced that it will double the number of highways where it can operate the system, so drivers should be able to relax while cruising on long trips.

The Equinox EV doesn’t have the same refinement of other vehicles in this class, so it will take some time for the driver to get comfortable with its unrefined ride quality and noisy interior. Wind, road, and engine noise all bleed into the cabin when driving at highway speeds. Even when using a noise-canceling feature, the system can’t quite drown out this unwanted noise.

Fortunately, the Equinox EV will be available with some of the most advanced safety technologies in the market, including automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning.
